Choledocholithiasis: an Overview

Choledocholithiasis (also called Bile duct stones or CBD stones) is the presence of stone/ stones in the common bile duct (CBD) of the Hepatobiliary system. Mostly these stones are coming from the gallbladder through the cystic duct.

These stones are also may originate in the common bile duct itself. Stones in the common bile duct can cause biliary obstruction, cholangitis, pancreatitis or secondary biliary cirrhosis. Patient presents with severe pain abdomen, vomiting, fever and jaundice.

These CBD stones are typically removed using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure. After ERCP, removable of Gallbladder is advisable by laparoscopically.

Laparoscopic CBD exploration (LCBDE) for Common bile duct (CBD) stones with laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is an alternative to open CBD exploration, in patients with failed ERCP.
